Item Description
To show America's naval might, Theodore Roosevelt sent sixteen battleships (in two squadrons) on a round the world cruise from Dec. 16, 1907 to Feb. 22, 1909. The Second Squadron made an historic visit to Amoy, China from Oct. 29, 1908 through Nov. 5, 1908. There was a huge reception and many elaborate events including entertainment and sports contests for the sailors plus a major banquet on Nov. 3rd. Souvenirs were created for both officers and enlisted men such as flags, metal trays, vases, fans, and the cloisonne miniature teacup and saucer offered here. Like this item, many of the souvenirs feature the American flag crossed with the Chinese Imperial flag of a blue dragon on a yellow field. The saucer, in a floral pattern, is 3" dia., somewhat concave and finished in cloisonne on both upper and lower surfaces. The teacup is 1-3/8" tall tapered from .75" brass rim that fits into an open brass ring on the saucer's center to an upper diameter of 2-1/16". There is a barely noticeable enamel flake 1/8" dia. and with only a speck of metal showing just above the staff holding the Imperial flag. A second 1/16" mark, not through to the metal, is on right lower side and also barely noticeable. The item comes directly from relatives of the man who participated in the Great White Fleet's China visit. The group includes his photo 4x5.5" mounted on stiff 8x9.75" cardboard mat marked "Campbell, Norfolk, Va." Mat has few small marks and lower right corner stain. The photo is clean and shows Charles Stolp in uniform and wearing hat reading "U.S.R.S. Franklin." The initials stand for "United States Receiving Ship" with a receiving ship being a vessel that serves as point of induction of new recruits. The Franklin was not part of the world tour but rather the sailors' first ship prior to the tour from the naval station Norfolk. The last item is a colorful silk-like fabric 21x21.5". This was framed once so it has tanned outer border with tack holes all around. However, everything within the red, white and blue stars and stripes borders is extremely clean, with just a few small fabric stress marks on the red square border at upper left. It is titled "Souvenir Of Our Famous Cruise Around The World." Shown are President Roosevelt, probably the Secretary of the Navy and the four rear admirals in charge of the two squadrons and four divisions, including Rear Admiral Robley (Fighting Bob) Evans. All sixteen ships in the fleet are pictured within a life preserver design. Fabric has fold lines that will iron out and piece would display Exc. framed. A group of neat items from this history-making Theodore Roosevelt inspired cruise around the world.
