Item Description
c.1950s. Five figures ranging in size from 3.5" tall to 4.25" tall, complete with plastic hoop earrings, beaded necklaces and thin copper bracelet on left arm along with 3.75" goat and 12" tall tree with fabric palm fronds (some minor fading). Each is ©Irene Nye on underside with number. Includes #200B, #203 lying down figure, #205 with no spear or shield, #207, #211 palm tree which is complete with single coconut, figure frog leaping over turtle (number not indicated but #214 in the series). One of the best and most expressive images in the series which has gold foil sticker on front of turtle shell “Irene Nye Ceramics” with palm tree and bamboo design. Last is a goat figurine which has no number and is a scarce piece from this series. All pieces are Exc. Figures are based on 1903 comic strip “A Tale of Jungle Imps by Felix Fiddle”, Winsor McCay’s first published comic strip. In the late 1930s, after McCay’s death, his son Winsor McCay Jr. revived the elder McCay’s characters. Ceramic artist Irene Nye, inspired by the characters popularity, created a series of glazed ceramic figures based on the Imps in the 1950s. Wonderful design and color with great detail. Scarce due to limited distribution.
