Item Description
7/8" c. 1896 and with a rarely-seen celluloid covered backpaper that has rare format of single patent date: July 11th, 1894. This is quite possibly the company's first self-promotional button. Pictured are 3 young black boys as if sprawling curbside with caption below "Here Comes De Parade/Jus Look At Dem Badges." Text at top reads "The Whitehead & Co./Badges & Lapel Buttons/Newark, N.J." Lt. tan age marks only on extreme outer edge. Only example known with this early backpaper style used briefly in early 1896 and prior to the awarding of their April 14, 1896 patent which was added to a second redesigned backpaper used until the third patent date of July 21, 1896 required a third redesign. From the Morry Greener Collection.
