Item Description
This beautifully made early item consists of leather edged celluloid covers measuring 3x5.25x.5" thick. The book has 320 pages with staggered edges with alphabet designations for easy referencing. The item is made by Whitehead & Hoag and carries an 1892 copyright but that date references the dictionary with the item probably being issued around 1898. The "Trade Mark" on the front cover includes illustration of a black man. Below this are eight lines of Latin and English verse basically threatening anyone who steals this dictionary with death. Back cover has wonderful illustration of spider at web center and advertises "Cobweb Carbon." Light general wear but the celluloid areas are extremely clean and the pages just have a little edge wrinkling where thumbed. Morry Greener Collection. Only example we've seen.
