Item Description
Joy-Toys was founded in the 1920s in South Yarra, Australia by Gerald Kirby and his wife. It was likely the very first Australian teddy bear factory. The company got off to a rough start until they started making Disney characters under license around 1935. Each doll is stuffed fabric with felt ears. Includes two different designs for Mickey, each 11" tall. He is in his traditional red shorts in one design with “Joy-Toys” die-cut tag pinned on front and he is wearing checkered pants with checkered hands in other design without tag. Minnie is 12" tall overall wearing polka-dot skirt with fabric flowers on her hat and has die-cut “Joy-Toys” tag pinned on front. Tags have art of Mickey on front with text ©Walt Disney Productions. Dolls appear to be made in the 1950s but company was obviously still using their 1930s patterns. Second Mickey doll has some fading to facial features but overall dolls are VF/Exc. with Fine tags.
