Auction #205 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1426 in auction 205
Item Description
1.75x3-5/16" stiff card, likely to serve as a ticket, reads in full "Free Mass Meeting/Belasco Theater, Sunday December 9th At 3 o'clock/Speakers: Dudley Field Malone/Mrs. O.H.P. Belmont/And/Suffrage Pickets Just Released From Prison/National Woman's Party." In October 1917 Alice Paul was arrested and sent to solitary confinement in Occoquan Workhouse near Washington D.C. She joined many women already in prison for suffrage protests and went on a hunger strike prompting authorities to move her to the psychiatric ward and force feed her raw eggs. Eventually the frustrated authorities released the women who came together for the event described on this card at D.C.'s Belasco Theater. Socialite suffragette Mrs. O.H.P. Belmont, who funded the National Woman's Party, bestowed prison pins fashioned in the shape of cell doors upon each of the women. Dudley Field Malone, a former supporter of Wilson and Collector of the Port of New York, spoke at this event. He resigned his position to protest the Wilson administration failure to advocate a woman's suffrage amendment. A rare card for historic one day event. NM.
