Item Description
Includes: five "Superman of Metropolis Award" certificates, each 11x14"; two issues of giant 64-page comic book, each 10.5x14"; two bumper stickers, each 3x14"; 14.5" wide felt pennant, 2-1/8" pin-back button, match pack, and four different special issues of complete "The Metropolis Planet" newspapers. Dates are Dec. 28, 1972; May 17, May 24, and June 28, 1973. Illustrated articles include plans for exhibit, progress in building and opening dignitaries including presidential candidate George McGovern and state Senator Charles Percy along with DC editors Carmine Infantino and Sol Harrison. Newspapers have lt. aging but are overall complete and Fine. Rest of group is unused and Exc./NM. Originally planned as a $50 million theme park with 1,000 acres, the 1970 oil shortage and Interstate Highway construction delays brought the project to and end. The town of Metropolis, Ill. still holds an annual Superman celebration at the Superman museum which includes a statue of Lois Lane modeled on Noel Neill designed by Gary Ernest Smith which was unveiled in 2010. An interesting group.
