Item Description
1950.  17.5x21.5x2.5" deep wood display case with hinged lid has inside lid paper titled "Hopalong Cassidy Dies & Labels". Production runs were in 10,000 unit increments.  The first 10,000 radios showed Topper with both front legs in a raised position.  William Boyd did not approve of this design as he thought the two front feet up position was inhumane to horses. and changed the style so that Topper had one foot on the ground and one in the air.  This display contains metal dies and sample foil fronts for each radio variety along with lead pencil original art showing second design which has been approved by William Boyd with initials "Ok W.L.B."  Two die-cut foil front samples are both 4.5x7.5".  Version mounted inside lid of case has Topper with his feet in the air and version in bottom part of case has Topper with one foot on the ground and other in air.  Original art is on 4x7" sheet neatly cut out with Boyd initials in fountain pen ink.  Case holds total of four metals pieces- two dies, two printing blocks. Dies are each 4.75x8-3/8" for first and revised versions. Two 3x4" printing blocks for first and second versions are also here. Used for promotional purposes, brochures, etc. Each item in display has typewritten text done by consignor describing what each piece is.  Inside lid has photocopies of two different ledger pages from radio company with list of products produced including Hopalong Cassidy radio.  Original art for revised design has yellowed cellophane tape around sides as issued otherwise display case contents are Exc.  Comes with original 5.5x8.5" "Hopalong Cassidy Radio Operating Instructions" illustrated four-page folder with photo on front of Hoppy on Topper and inside art of Hoppy showing instructions for using "Lariatenna" antenna.  Radio shown is first variety with Topper's legs in air.  Exc.  Scarce.  Also includes photocopy of ad for first variety radio and 1992 typewritten letter from "Electrocon North America" company with text including "The Hopalong Cassidy Radios You Asked About Were Manufactured By Noblitt-Sparks Industries And Arvin Industries (on July 5, 1950 Noblitt-Sparks Industries changed its name to Arvin Industries)."  Letter is Exc.  Signed in ballpoint pen by Michael E. McCormick Director of Sales.  Truly unique collection including one of a kind items.  90,000 Hoppy radios were made in total between 1950 and 1951. They have remained a classic to this day.
