Item Description
The Eden Musée was founded in New York City on 23rd Street in 1883 as a musical theater and amusement house inspired by London's Madame Tussaud's wax works. In the 1890s they introduced moving pictures as an attraction by installing kinetoscopes in 1895 and then moving pictures on a screen via Lumiere system in December, 1896. The Eden Musée became the pre-eminent location for cinematic art in America. This button is from 1898. It is 7/8" with name of maker on reverse W&H along with larger text "New Groups Today. Moving Scenes Of The War." Front of the button has the establishment's name along with the text "New War Groups." The movies referred to were taken by William Paley, using Edison equipment, to film war views beginning with U.S. Troops embarking from Florida to Cuba as well as films of the invasion itself. The earliest button we know of relating to the moving picture in America. See early Los Angeles penny arcade metal badge #1439. NM displaying Mint. Rare.
