Item Description
This item and a handful of additional lead proofs and prototypes came into the hobby in the late 1970s via a man who worked in the famous premium producing company Robbins of Attleboro, Mass. See the following item as well as the series of Tom Mix items #1616-1623. This piece is 3/16x1.5x2-7/8". It is unlisted in Hake's Pop Culture Guide. For a visual example of the finished decoder see item 1634 in this Auction. This unique proof has Robbins production number scratched on reverse "M5127." The front of the piece has two images of the inner metal wheel from the 1935 decoder. In the finished piece there was an outer rim bearing a circle of letters and the concept was to match this inner wheel with a circle of numbers in order to decode numeric messages once the announcer told listeners how to line up a numeral with a letter serving as the master code. Each of the raised images on this lead proof has a circle of numbers from 1 through 26. On the interior of the circle are a pair of star accents along with a pair of crossed keys which are symbolic of a code key, along with the text "Radio Orphan Annie's S.S." The letters "S.S." standing for "Secret Society." Mint as made.
