Item Description
23.5x29.5" linen-backed print "Engraved By H.S. Sadd" based on a painting by T.H. Matteson and "Published By William Pate 16 Burling Slip N.Y." Print is dated 1852 but is a c. 1861 revised engraving of one originally issued to commemorate the Compromise of 1850. Print has an image area of 19.5x26.5". Publisher Pate altered the original engraving by removing the pro-Southern personalities and putting in pro-Northern politicians. Lincoln replace James Calhoun. Others added include Edward Everett, William Seward, Benjamin Butler and Robert Anderson. Left and right sides have noticeable color loss on two vertical fold lines, blank top margin has three missing pieces with largest being .5x2" and just a bit into image area. Lower left of image has pair of 3" tears which extend into blank margins, and lower right margin has 1.5" tear extending 1.5" into shield design. Blank margins have minor traces of lt. aging. Print overall would mat and frame to VG appearance. Superb detail, with a classic image of Lincoln holding a quill pen in his right hand with the other on the Constitution.
