Item Description
6.5x9.5" black fabric over cardboard cover album w/photos glued on paper pages. Album covers show moderate wear, but Fine. 34 pages w/photos and eight blank pages, a couple w/glue trace remnants of removed photos. Photos divide into two main groups. 18 are 4.5x6.25" and 15 of these appear to be scenes around Manilla and surrounding countryside. About 25 photos are mostly around 3.25" square and appear to be from years following the seaman's return to the US. Beginning w/the larger-sized Manilla photos, we will in order detail the images we show and add brief notes on what is not shown. A) soldier by tree; B) parade ground w/apparent Filipinos in formation, five bodies on ground, numerous men in black religious robes and spectators in foreground; C) three soldiers view six or more dead guerrillas in field; D) caption in print reading "20 Paco Cemetary" and shows four soldiers holding bones, skulls and large constrictor snake next to massive pile of human skulls/bones; E) loose 4x5" photo of man in coat, hat and mask holding skull and large knife; F) nine men pose w/two dogs and two cats, one man holds hack saw and one man in wig w/pipe and bugle. Small nick off top edge. Other large photos include four soldiers on road lined w/big palm trees (edge chip), several of churches, damaged buildings, several of plants and sugar cane (two of these w/margin captions and "Severin Phot." as part of image. Mostly non-Manilla photos include 5x6.5" of cotton field w/black and white workers. Among smaller photos are woman loading pistol, dog swimming in pond, men w/handcar by railroad tracks and several that may be Manilla of man on water buffalo, man w/cape, sombrero and gun in waistband and man in helmet and armor holding wooden shield. Album includes a few torn or very poor contrast photos but these are the exception and those we have specifically described are in VF or better condition unless noted o/w.
