Item Description
8.5x11" cloth-bound hardcover w/72 pages. "Astonaut '63" yearbook for Will Rogers Junior High School, Miami, OK. This is Cassie's 9th Grade yearbook and Steve's 8th Grade yearbook. Both have the typical school portraits within, Cassie also being featured drawing in journalism class, as a cheerleader as well as having the "Most School Spirit." Steve appears as a member of the 8th Grade Basketball team and Student Council. In Dec., 1975, Cassie Gaines became a member of southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd's female backup singers, The Honkettes. During this time, the band was in the midst of searching for a guitarist to replace Ed King, who left the band in 1975. Cassie recommended her brother Steve, and after initial reluctance, the band allowed Gaines to join. Sadly, on Oct. 20, 1977, the band's airplane crashed en route to Baton Rouge, LA., killing the pilot, co-pilot, the group's assistant road-manager and three band members (including Steve & Cassie Gaines), and severely injured most who survived the crash. Yearbook covers are lightly aged and book has typical penciled/inked inscriptions throughout. VF.
