Item Description
These are each 1.25" and the first two have their Bastian paper while the third has its St. Louis Button Co paper. First button pictures the globe with photos of "Cook" at left and "Peary" at right flanking the text "I Discovered The - ." Missing from the button, suspended below by a thin wire, is a wooden pole 1-3/8" tall shaped more or less like the Washington Monument and which served as a rebus for the words "North Pole." Button is otherwise Mint. Second is choice multi color implying a cooperative planting of the U.S. flag at the North Pole but inspired by the 1909 controversy as to whether Peary or Cook arrived first. Third is a gorgeous real photo button with portrait and text "America's Explorer Son Admiral Byrd." He is posed against an illustration of massive ice peaks while below the left one is an illustration representing his 1928 base camp Little America on the Ross Ice Shelf. Below the right peak is a small image of his flagship City of New York. Byrd flew over the South Pole in November 1929 and then returned to a ticker-tape New York City parade June 18, 1930 for which this button was likely produced. All three buttons are NM displaying Mint. See following two related lots.
