Item Description
Large and graphic box is 10.5x15.5x2" deep and contains complete amount of 10 race cars. 1936 by Joseph Schneider, Inc. of New York. Lid features large image of Donald holding checkered flag while race cars driven by Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Pluto speed around the track. Only cars with Mickey and Donald drivers were actually produced. Side panels of box have additional Mickey image. Box has obvious wear. Top side panel is missing. Lid has additional edge wear, box bottom has just one corner split. Complete w/insert to hold the 10 cars in place. Despite wear, lid remains glossy and w/vibrant color. Good. Each car is 4" long tin litho. Five have tin Mickey driver, five have Donald. Total of six color varieties: red, yellow, orange, blue, green and gray. These cars were issued in two distinct versions: wind-up w/rubber tires and non-wind up for use with the even rarer "Rideeo" set and features all metal wheels. These non-wind up cars were placed on a race track record player set and revolved as a record played. We know of no example of this toy existing but it can be seen on page 220 of Disneyana by Munsey (which also shows this boxed Speedway set). This box has three of this variety and seven wind-ups complete w/original tires. Includes six keys and all work. Rubber tires have normal and typical aging issues. Tin car bodies have varying degrees of wear including paint nicks/scratches but all remain bright and glossy. Overall VG to VF. It is conceivable that the cars were acquired over the years to fill this box and not issued w/this exact configuration. This was originally sold at The Don Kaufman Collection sale April 2010 where it realized $6,900 and comes w/that auction tag.
