Item Description
Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry. The name originates in Ancient Greece, where it was believed that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The ancient Greeks and Romans wore amethyst and made drinking vessels of it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. It is one of several forms of quartz. Amethyst is also the traditional birthstone for February. We are offering a 15.5x17x6" deep amethyst geode that has additional calcite crystals scattered throughout. This large specimen weighs just under 46 lbs. This geode was opened, revealing a carpet of amethyst crystal of a rich lavender color carpeting the interior. This example was found in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state in Brazil. The base has been polished smooth so the geode can be displayed upright.
