Auction #206 - Part II
Item numbers 1279 through 2976 in auction 206
Item Description
An olive green color and smooth or scaly appearance is the basis of the name from the Latin serpentinus, meaning "serpent rock." Many types of serpentine have been used for jewelry and hardstone carving, sometimes under the name false jade or Teton jade. We are offering a carving of two frogs by artist Rodin Lee. The piece measures 4.25x5.75x3-7/8" tall overall and depicts two smooth frogs on a rough base. While it may appear that the frogs were carved separately and attached, this is not the case, as Lee has carved from a solid block from China, the serpentine adding to the piece's visual appeal as its natural green color adds to the frog's appearance of just sitting on the base. Lee is known for his sculptures utilizing this effect. Exc.
