Item Description
5x9" oversized postcard for hotel/casino located in Las Vegas, NV. It was the first desegregated hotel casino in the United State and was popular w/many of the black entertainers of the time, who would entertain at other hotels/casinos and stay at the Moulin Rouge. Will Max Schwartz saw the need for an integrated hotel. Schwartz, along w/investors Louis Rubin, Alexander Bisno and boxing great Joe Louis, built and opened the Moulin Rouge on May 24, 1955. Famous black musical acts such as Lena Horne, Sammy Davis Jr., Sarah Vaughan, Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong would often perform there and white performers including Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra, would drop in after their shows to gamble and perform. The short-lived venue closed its doors in Nov., 1955. A photo of Louis is pictured alongside an image of the Moulin Rouge and reads in part "Your Host Joe Louis." Card has pencil message on reverse and was postally issued and bears July 8, 1955 postmark. Scattered handling wear and staining. VG.
