Item Description
3.5x5.5" postcard for the Goldfield-Silver Peak Mining Company of Goldfield, NV. Postcard features cartoon image of man striding between signposts marked "San Francisco" and "Goldfield" while carrying a bag marked "A. Sport." Photo images of Oscar Nelson and Joe Gans are at each upper corner. On Sept. 3, 1906 one of the most legendary championship fights took place in Goldfield between two of the greatest lightweights to ever step into the ring. Joe Gans and Oscar "Battling" Nelson battled for Gans’ lightweight title. The bout itself lasted an astounding 48 rounds. A film company that was there to record the event ran out of money and film in the 38th round and had to stop shooting. As such, no film record of who actually won the bout was recorded but Nelson delivered a low blow in the 48th round and was disqualified making Gans the winner by default. Gans was the first African-American World Boxing Champion, reigning continuously as World Lightweight Champion from 1902 to 1908. Postcard shows wear from handling and has a few tiny surface paper flakes at lower left corner. Large areas of paper residue from scrapbook mounting on reverse. VG.
