Item Description
Rare and historic 1.25" button depicting both men at the White House dinner table sharing food and drink. The single word inscription "Equality" can be viewed according to the preferences of the viewer as either a pro or anti TR item, likely issued for the 1904 campaign but the scene records an event from October 16, 1901, about one month after McKinley's funeral services. TR invited Washington to dinner to make good on his pledge to consult Washington on matters of race and patronage. For a detailed account of the event as well as the praise and outrage it envoked, read the biography "Theodore Rex" by Edmund Morris, Chapter 2. This example has full original intense color and perfect centering with high gloss. There are a couple of tiny age dots only one of which stands out much at all. Three hardly noticeable marks are along the top edge in the area of the pale blue ceiling. To the right of Washington's head is a small 1/16" dot just a little darker in color than the surrounding cream wallpaper which is accented by faint yellow accent dots as made. Opposite the chair back on extreme right edge are a couple of other near pinpoint dots just a little darker than the surrounding color. The button's backpaper has W&H patent dates and also the name of button jobber "Wm. F. Miller & Co. New York." Overall a VF example whose positive qualities far outweigh the few small defects. Examples have exceeded $5,000.00 at auction.
