2.5x4" w/front text "Ye Great Men Of Ye Day. Dr. Mary Walker, Ye What-Is-It?" Reverse has significant paper loss but majority of text remains, promoting "Payne's Popular Remedies." Front has lt. dust soiling and .25" edge tear. Walker is the only female recipient of the Medal of Honor and was a feminist, abolitionist, prohibitionist, alleged spy, prisoner of war and surgeon. Dr. Walker volunteered w/the Union Army at the outbreak of the American Civil War and served as a female surgeon. She was captured by Confederate forces after crossing enemy lines to treat wounded civilians and arrested as a spy. She spent time as a prisoner of war in Richmond, VA. After the war she became a writer and lecturer, avidly supporting the women's suffrage movement.
