Item Description
9x12" program w/20 pages. Released by Universal Studios in conjunction w/the original 1925 release of the now classic silent horror film "The Phantom Of The Opera" starring Lon Chaney Sr. Inside front cover has portrait of Universal founder Cal Laemmle and has images of him w/Phantom author Gaston Leroux. Program goes on to list the cast, in which Chaney gets top-billing. Some scenes from the film are shown, but as Chaney's contract prohibited Universal from showing him unmasked in any of the pre-release material, his face has been blanked out. However another article, "The Man Of A Thousand Faces," accidentally reveals the Phantom's face in a presentation of Chaney's other fantastic film make-ups. Additionally, there is a cross-section of the Paris Opera House. Chaney is seen as The Phantom four additional times, twice in his Red Death costume and twice w/his face mask. These images are quite small and Chaney is slightly difficult to make out. Program has scattered handling wear w/pinch creases to spine and dust soiling. top and bottom right corners have moisture staining throughout entire program in a 3-4" area. VG. Great early promotional material featuring one of horror's earliest icons.
