Item Description
11.5x14.5" wooden frame w/9-5/8x12.5" opening contains c. 1870 print. Features portrait image of "Rudolph Lucasie, Wife And Child, From Madagascar," who were touted thusly - "They Have Pure White Skin, Silken White Hair And Pink Eyes, Though Born OF Perfectly Black Parents!" The Lucasies, an albino family, were obtained in Holland by Phineas Barnum during a visit to Amsterdam in 1857. He brought them back to America where they became one of his most popular exhibits. The Lucasies were managed by long time Barnum employee Dr. Oscar Kohn. Along w/others in Barnum's employ they appeared in his American Museum and offered life story pamphlets for sale along w/15¢ carte de visite photographs. Has 3" tear at left crossing Rudolph's waist, which is only really noticeable in black bkg. Scattered moderate aging/dust soiling w/a few .25" or less age spots and tiny faint tan spots. VG.
