Item Description
First, a bit of history. The American Brass Band is the oldest continuously running civilian concert band in the United States. An early form of the band began in 1825 known as the Providence (R.I.) Martial Team. In November 1837 (the year on this item) the band formally organized as the American Band and Orchestra Of Providence, RI (also known as the American Brass Band). The group became renowned throughout New England. The group volunteered to serve in the Civil War and its three months of service involved carrying wounded soldiers from the battlefields, including Battle Of Bull Run, 1861. After the war, the band was designated the official band of New England and marched in several presidential inaugurations. Two milestones in the band's history took place in 1887, the second of the two dates on this item. One was their 50th anniversary concert which included surviving original band members. The other was the formation of the group named on this badge "American Brass Band Veterans Association." This badge was created and apparently given to one of the original members of that group. The badge is 3-1/8" tall beautifully accented in black enamel. The top hanger bar has design of a musical score wrapped in a scroll with the hand engraved name "Edw. K. Smith." Hanger joins to lower piece consisting of a beautifully detailed trumpet while below is a shield and wreath design with the inscription "American Brass Band Veterans Association 1837-1887." Reverse of the piece is blank. Trivial bend on the horizontal bar pin. An extremely limited issue and unique with the engraving of specific member's name. NM luster. See following 1869 music item.
