Item Description
Our Very Fine example in Auction #206 realized $8855.00. It was among the three best known to us. That result brought in this even higher grade Near Mint example. We've seen only one other example in equal condition. Ring is from 1941, produced by Ostby & Barton of Rhode Island, offered as a premium for Superman Defense Club milk program costing two bottle caps and 10¢. In Hake's Pop Culture Memorabilia 2008 Price Guide only ten examples were known with four in Good, five in Fine, and one in Very Fine. Since 2008 we offered one NM example and now this is the second of equal quality. Ring sides have a star and a planet design. Ring top has brass snap off cover with the letter "S" at upper left and a diagonal lightning bolt plus well-struck image of Superman from the waist up breaking a chain across his chest depicted at lower right. The bands on the ring are perfectly formed. Most luster lost on this ring is essentially microscopic in nature. Ring base has about 97% luster. Removable ring top has about 30% luster off the letter "S" and tiny dots of luster off the lightening bolt, Superman's arm, Superman's hand and the chain over his chest. However, in total, ring top retains over 90% luster. A high grade Near Mint example and equal to only one other as the best known.
