Item Description
9.75x12.75" issus of "Theatre Magazine" published by Theatre Magazine Co. Sept., 1929. Magazine deals w/various theater aspects, actors/actresses and upcoming plays. Page 23 features large photo that showcases Bela Lugosi in menacing pose. Brief text underneath photo reads "'Count Dracula' Becomes 'Menace' In The Movies - Bela Lugosi Famous On The Stage As The Sinister Vampire In Dracula, Makes His Bow Before The Movies In The Leading Male Role Opposite Margaret Wycherly In The Thirteenth Chair. He Is Also Slated For The Role Of Dracula In Its Film Version." Magazine shows moderate wear w/pinch creases/tears to spine and heavy creasing to front cover. VG w/Exc. contents. Next is 5.25x7.75" theater program for 1928-1929 season and is entitled "Plays And Players." Standard theater/play text content throughout, w/last page having half page notice concerning "Next Attraction - Monday, November 12th - The Thriller - Dracula" and mentions John Balderston, who was retained by Horace Liveright to revise Hamilton Deane's stage adaptation of Dracula for its American production. This subsequently formed the basis of the 1931 film version. Program has vertical fold at center and spine wear. VG/Fine. Despite Bela Lugosi's hundreds of performances on stage as Count Dracula, he was not Universal's first choice to play the undead Count. Lugosi was only selected after the death of Lon Chaney Sr., closer to the time the film went into production in 1930. Interesting and historical early Lugosi Dracula content.
