Item Description
2.25x7”. Text in total reads “Reception Committee/Akron/Sep’t 23rd, 1899” with names of Nash, McKinley, Roosevelt but only remaining photo is of Nash. The Republicans had chosen George Nash as the gubernatorial candidate for Ohio and held a reception/rally to kick off the Nash campaign. This was one of 3 visits TR made to Ohio as governor of New York. He gave a speech to thousands from a grandstand in Grace Park to kick off the campaign. Roosevelt said the only way to uphold the honor of the American flag is to defeat the Philippines. Although Roosevelt became McKinley’s running mate in 1900, this ribbon cannot be considered a coattail as neither McKinley nor Roosevelt were running for office in 1899. Slight tone/spots on Nash photo, some fabric stresses upper left but no tears, and some loss of gold on some words. Only the second we’ve seen. Senator Charles Dick Collection.
