Item Description
This effort began in 1877 when Rev. Willard Parsons of a small rural parish in Sherman, Pa. asked congregation members to provide country vacations as volunteers for New York City's neediest children. By 1881 the effort was expanding so rapidly that he secured support from The New York Tribune. In 1888, ten years before this button, the Fund was incorporated as The Tribune Fresh Air Fund Society. W&H back paper has age spots but the celluloid has only the tiniest faint mark on lower right and still displays glossy and NM. See following newspaper item as well as #494 for Robert McCormick, an early political button for future Chicago Tribune owner.
