Item Description
1.75" highly domed button has flat tin back with vertical stick pin. Text reads "Maryland & Massachusetts/May, 1898/Baltimore Welcomes The 6th Mass. Reg't." During the Civil War when this regiment arrived in Baltimore they were greeted by a mob and members were the first men to lose their lives in that war. In contrast this 1898 button celebrated their arrival which included a four mile march through the city streets lined deep with cheering citizens. After the elaborate reception these troops marched to Camp Alger and from there they sailed onto Puerto Rico. Tiny traces of tan age primarily on the edges. High gloss and still displays extremely Fine. Rare single day event button.
