First and foremost is the 10x11.5x1" deep box titled "The Mickey Mouse Box/Five Books Of Adventure Stories With Mickey And His Friends." This is Whitman set #2146. Lid features Mickey & Minnie, Donald Duck, Goofy and Clarabelle. However, it was issued w/books featuring totally different characters, all books were from the 1058 series. This is validated by the photo of this boxed set in the 1940 Disney merchandise catalog (also shown on page 181 of the Munsey book). While the box notes "Five Books" there are actually six in this series and all are in this lot. Titles are: Mother Pluto, Timid Elmer, Brave Little Tailor, Practical Pig, Ugly Duckling, Farmyard Symphony. All are ©1939. The books were also sold individually and how most copies were purchased resulting in the rarity of the box. Box has dust soiling/aging, penciled names on top margin, corner splits on lid w/other edge wear. Color remains strong and still VG overall. The books are each 5x5.5" w/bw story art. Scattered wear but overall Fine copies. Also included is the Whitman 1066 "Story Of" set ©1938 which is in similar format. Books are: Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto, Dippy The Goof and Clarabelle. Moderate wear, Mickey has loose front cover, otherwise VG to Fine and these just come along as a bonus. The boxed sets are rarely offered and the few we have seen sell at auction have realized between $2,300 and $3,400 for higher grade examples. This is the first set we have offered in our 47 years.
