Item Description
F.B.I. Agent Melvin Purvis became known to the American public in 1934 when with the help of the "Women In Red" he and other agents ambushed and killed the notorious bank robber John Dillinger as he left the Biograph movie theatre in Chicago. Three months later Purvis, again acting on a tip, led a raid on an Ohio farm that ended in the death of outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd. Purvis left the FBI in 1935 and wrote a book about his experiences which led to his sponsorship by Post Cereals and his first radio program in 1936. The program club was titled "Junior G-Man Corps" and that appears on the first four of these brass badges. The second year the club became known as the "Law And Order Patrol" and that appears on the badges from 1937. Each of the six badges for boys is about 1.25" tall while the two badges for the "Girls Division" are about 2" wide. From 1936 we have "Junior G-Man, Roving Operative, Chief Operative and Junior G-Man Corps/Girls Division." For 1937 we have "Secret Operator, Lieutenant Secret Operator, Captain Secret Operator, and Secret Operator/Girls Division." The 1936 badges have VF to Exc. luster. The 1937 lowest rank badge has some darkening of the brass luster and all of the black lettering is off the Girls example but the lettering is still easily read on close inspection. The other two badges for this year show slight wear but are extremely Fine with bright luster. A seldom offered complete set.
