Auction #209 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1144 in auction 209
Item Description
Photo is 4x5.75” mounted on paper sheet 5x7”. Douglass (misspelled) written on bottom margin and then over-written in ink. Paper has three margin tears .5” or less but photo is perfect. It appears a pinpoint dot of brown color was placed on each eye pupil as made to give them definition. Reverse has penciled inventory code and date of 1858. Some paper residue on three reverse corners from mounting long ago. Comes with slip of photocopied text titled “(Whig, Oct 16, 1858) The Douglas Pictures” that relates pro-Lincoln humorous incident as follows: “The Agent Who Sells Photographic Likenesses Of Judge Douglas Was In The City On Wednesday, Hawking Them Through The Crowd During The Speeches. While Mr. Lincoln Was Closing The Debate, A Gentleman Asked Him If He Was Not Willing To Sell His Pictures At A Discount Now? He Said That He Was – That The Price Was 75 Cents When Douglas Was Speaking – That They Had Been Reduced To 60 Cents, And That He Thought He Would Be Compelled To Reduce Them To 25 Cents Before Lincoln Got Through! We Don’t Believe There Was A Douglasite In Quincy Who Had The Remotest Desire To Buy A Picture When Lincoln Had Concluded His Half Hour’s Speech.” See Lincoln-Douglas 1908 Anniversary items #145-147.
