Item Description
First is clipped portion of a sealed envelope back, about 3.75x4.75”. One side has about 1.5” dia. Presidential wax seal with eagle and text “The Seal Of The President Of The United States.” Shows chipping on outer border. Thin crack in wax barely noticeable. Other side begins with pencil notation “51-2nd Ses.” The 51st Congress was March 1, 1889 to March 1891 and passed landmark legislation that expanded the federal government’s authority. Inscribed at left is “B.F.H. Pres.” Opposite is paragraph that reads: “Thos. B. Reed Speaker/This Seal Was Cut Off Of A Message From The President Of The U.S. By The Speaker Of The H Of Rep And Given To Thos. Tabler By Him.” Next is a sheet of Tabler & Co., D.C. stationery. “Thomas” is named on previous item, but business name on this is “Charles W.” and tiny text at stationery top, seemingly related to the Spanish-American War, reads on left “Chas. W. Tabler,/Late U.S. Volunteers” and right “Chas. A. Gibson, U.S. Navy.” Date line is numbered “189” with space to add a final numeral. Next is 3.25x5.25” stiff card titled and reading “Counting The Electoral Vote./February, 10, 1897./Admit Bearer To The/Gallery House Of Representatives.” Followed by printed signatures of “Adlai E. Stevenson” and ‘Thomas B. Reed.” Last is “Thomas B. Reed – Parliamentarian/American Political Leaders” hardbound book by William A. Robinson. 6.5x9.5”. 424 pages. 1930 by Dodd Mead and Co. A detailed read on Reed. Part of a series on American politicians. Exc. A neat lot. Not many Presidential message wax seals from 1890/1891 in the world. All from The Senator Charles Dick Collection.
