For coin history, see previous item #752. This is a doubled die error coin. Doubled die is a term used in numismatics to refer to doubling in the design elements of a coin. Doubled dies can appear as an outline of the design or in extreme cases, having legends and dates appear twice in an overlapping fashion. This example features doubled die obverse, unquestionably the most famous doubled die coin in the entire Lincoln cent series and possibly the most famous doubled die coin in numismatics. The doubling on the 1955 doubled die cent is very dramatic and can easily seen w/the naked eye, w/the doubling being most prominent on the date, the word "Liberty" and in the motto "In God We Trust."
