Item Description
Lot of 3. Handley-Page was one of the earliest makers of British airplanes and Standard Aircraft Corp. in Elizabeth, N.J. built a twin engine Handley-Page bomber to be called the Langley. First item is a 1-7/8x2.75" original photo of the Langley taken at the ceremonies. Photo has a lower right corner crease and some scrapbook residue paper on reverse. Next is a 3.5x5.5" bw card with photo of the Langley in front with date of July 6, 1918 with maker's name on back which served as invitation to the first flight. Scattered lt. wear, pinholes at right where ribbon was attached. Third item is 2-3/8x5.25" choice color silk ribbon showing an arm raising American flag, a quote in red at top from Oliver Wendell Holmes. Bold text at bottom "Official Flight Of The First Handley-Page Airplane (Standard Production) July 6, 1918 Standard Aircraft Corp. Aviation Field Elizabeth N. J." Silk ribbon printed by Whitehead & Hoag. The bottom portion of the silk has a few tan spots o/w Exc. Has bright colors and great design. Reverse has 2.5" straight pin for attachment to garment. Historic and interesting group.
