Item Description
6.5x7x6.5" tall fossilized dinosaur egg from the Henan Province of China. Egg dates to the early Cretaceous Period (70 million years old) and we believe egg is that of a Hadrosaurid dinosaur, (commonly known as duck-billed dinosaurs) a member of the ornithischian family Hadrosauridae. The family, which includes herbivorous ornithopods such as Edmontosaurus and Parasaurolophus, was common in the Upper Cretaceous Period of what is now Asia, Europe and North America. While we are unsure of the actual species, it is likely from the Saurolophinae subfamily, which include dinosaurs w/o the elaborate cranial crests seen in dinosaurs like Parasaurolophus and Lambeosaurus. These dinosaurs regularly attained sizes of 30 to 40 feet long and weighed four to seven tons. It is somewhat humbling then to see that these giant creatures began life in much, much smaller sizes. These dinosaurs laid their eggs in enormous nests which were closely guarded from the numerous predators that shared their habitat, not only during incubation, but even after hatching. This fossilized egg has numerous cracks to the shell, but egg did not hatch and has been fossilized more or less intact. Structural integrity of the fossil has been achieved w/some carefully rendered museum grade restoration to a few loose pieces of shell. Base of fossil is comprised of the original dinosaur nest, w/a partial impression of another egg easily visible on one side. Stunning historical fossil. From the Robert M. Overstreet Collection and comes with COA.
