Item Description
Immediately upon U.S. entry into WWI the Federal government created the U.S. Shipping Board Merchant Fleet Corporation also known as the Emergency Fleet Corp, or EFC, as shown on one of these items. Their goal was to construct merchant ships and the American International Ship Building Corporation was hired to build and operate the largest shipyard in the world, Hog Island, near Philadelphia. At its peak some 30,000 worker's launched a vessel every 5.5 days. These five items relate to that effort. First is embossed brass badge reading "War Service Ship Building." Reverse has serial number 5710. Next has similar design but larger and with eagle at top and anchor below. Text is the same as the previous but with additional letters on the anchor "U.S.A." This has serial number on reverse "12112." Next is brass oval lapel stud reading "Shipyard Volunteer" with letters "U.S." on the side of the pictured ship. Next is 7/8" cello button "Ships Will Win." Has W&H paper. Last is enamel lapel stud with threaded cap on reverse. This pictures ship with text below "Hog Island Penna." Rim reads "On Government Work/U.S.S.B/E.F.C./A.I.S.C." With these initials referring to the groups named in our text. All five are Exc. to NM. All but the cello button were quite limited issues.
