Item Description
1.5" with metal back and vertical pin with name of maker on curl Phila Badge Co. This was a Tambor-class submarine which launched November 29, 1940. Shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, she sailed for the Pacific to join the submarine fleet. This submarine saw much action. On her sixth patrol in 1943 on April 21st she spotted and was simultaneously spotted by a Japanese plane. She quickly dived and at the 130 feet level her executive commander commented "We Ought To Be Safe Now" but just then bombs rocked the sub fatally wounding the ship which settled to the bottom. The crew, after thirteen hours, managed to surface but the damage was irreparable. At dawn April 22, the crew sighted two Japanese ships heading for them and began to burn confidential documents prior to abandoning ship. The crew opened all vents and the ship sank with a Japanese merchantman ship picking up the 8 officers and 68 enlisted men who were taken to Penang, Malay States where they were questioned, beaten and starved before being sent to other prison camps. Despite their brutal treatment all but four of the crew survived two years of Japanese capture. NM displaying Mint.
