Item Description
H Chondrites are the most common type of meteorite, accounting for approximately 40% of all those cataloged, 46% of the ordinary chondrites, and 44% of the chondrites. The name comes from their high iron abundance, w/respect to other ordinary chondrites. Historically, the H chondrites have been named bronzite chondrites or olivine bronzite chondrites (as w/this specimen) for the dominant minerals, but these terms are now obsolete. A probable parent body for this group is the S-type asteroid 6 Hebe, with less likely candidates being the 3 Juno and 7 Iris asteroids. It is supposed that these meteorites arise from impacts onto small near-earth asteroids broken off from 6 Hebe in the past, rather than originating from 6 Hebe directly. Offered here is a 1-5/8x1-7/8x1.25" tall H chondrite meteorite that weighs 97.44 grams. This meteorite fell in Nuevo Mercurio in the Mexican state of Zacatecas on Dec. 15, 1978. This is a complete specimen w/a fusion crust covering the entirety of the meteorite. High nickel-iron content. Crust has scattered hairlines cracks as formed due to the immense heat generated by entry into the atmosphere. Still displays nicely. From the Robert M. Overstreet Collection and comes with COA.
