Auction #209 - Part II
Item numbers 1145 through 2874 in auction 209
Item Description
1.5" back stamped by maker Photo Jewelry, Chicago with 1898 patent date. Reverse is convex tin with fixed horizontal pin. Front has crisp real photo of him seated on a bench dressed in western garb and wearing his championship belt. He was known for riding the worst outlaw horses of the Wyoming ranges including the famous rodeo horse Steamboat. Sowder rode at the Denver Festival Of Mountains And Plains in 1901 where he won the championship belt. He then became the star and lead rider in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show. In 1902 he again won in Denver. In 1903 he did not compete in Denver but did ride in Cheyenne. He last rode in 1905. He died in 1931 after bouts of paralysis caused by his numerous injuries from his earlier career. Text quoted in our title is on the rim edges but also reads just below the bench in tiny type "M.T. Sowder/Champion Rough Rider/Of The World." This is followed by tiny text we believe reads "M.B. Walker Photo." Tan stain around 50% of the narrow cream rim but none into the image area. One seen. Historic.
