Item Description
13.75x20.75" cardboard poster for closed circuit TV broadcast of The Fight of the Century, also known as The Fight, the title writers and historians gave the boxing match between champion Joe Frazier and challenger Muhammad Ali, held March 8, 1971, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. In 1971, both Ali and Frazier had legitimate claims to the title of World Heavyweight Champion. An undefeated Ali had won the title from Sonny Liston in 1964, and successfully defended his belt up until it was stripped from him by boxing authorities due to his refusal to be inducted into the armed forces in 1967. In Ali's absence, the undefeated Frazier collected two championship belts and was recognized by boxing authorities as the World's Champion. Frazier was plausibly Ali's superior, which created a tremendous amount of hype and anticipation for a match pitting the two undefeated fighters against one another to decide who was the true heavyweight champion. Frazier retained the title w/a unanimous decision, dealing Ali his first professional loss. Poster has marquee area at bottom listing Allentown Fair Grounds as location for this particular broadcast. Poster features full body photo images of both boxers. Scattered traces of faint moisture staining along bottom margins, w/a heavy 6.25" long crease across Ali's body, but poster o/w displays Fine.
