Item Description
Original 27.5x41" one-sheet movie poster for the 1939 Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corp. film starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes, Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson and Richard Greene as Henry Baskerville. The studio apparently had no idea that the film would be such a hit (or that Rathbone and Bruce would go on to make a total of 14 Sherlock Holmes films, forever linking them w/the legendary detective pair), and top billing went to Greene, the film's romantic lead. Rathbone was billed second and Nigel Bruce (Dr. Watson) was billed fourth after female lead Wendy Barrie. After this film, Rathbone and Bruce would receive first and second billing respectively. Based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel "The Hound of the Baskervilles," the film was directed by Sidney Lanfield. This poster features an absolutely stunning design, w/a large silhouette image of Sherlock in the bkg. w/portrait images of Greene and Barrie within. To the left, a fearsome image of The Hound appears. Poster was printed by the Joseph H. Toomer Litho. Co., Inc. Originally folded, poster has some professional touch-ups to fold lines and some scattered margin wear. Top notch professional linen-mounting and restoration, poster displays Exc. Very rare and highly sought after one-sheet.
