Auction #210 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1270 in auction 210
Item Description
Lot of six meteorite slices. All are L chondrites, which comes from their relatively low iron abundance, w/respect to the H chondrites, which are about 20–25% iron by weight. Historically, L chondrites have been named hypersthene chondrites or olivine hypersthene chondrites (as w/these specimens) for the dominant minerals, but these terms are now obsolete. For more detailed L chondrite information, see item #936. First slice measures 7/8x1-3/8x.25" thick and weighs 16 grams. Second slice measures 1-3/8x2.5x.25" thick and weighs 17 grams. Both were found in Gaines County, TX. Third slice measures 1.25x2.5x.25" thick, weighs 38.03 grams and was found in Densmore, KS. Next specimen measures 1x1-7/8x.25" thick, weighs 19.05 grams and was found in Taiban, De Baca County, NM. Next specimen measures 1.25x2-5/8x.25" thick, weighs 31.14 grams and was found northwest of Pampa, near Mejillones, Chile. Last specimen measures 1.25x2-3/8x.25" thick, weighs 19.7 grams and was found in Bison, Rush County, KS. Two specimens (first and third described) have two or three smooth, polished edges while all have smooth sides w/some scattered fusion crust around edges due to the immense heat generated by entry into the atmosphere. Each of these specimens make for wonderful display, allowing for viewing the various meteorites' mineral make-ups. From the Robert M. Overstreet Collection and comes with COA.
