Item Description
2-1/8" dia. silver luster case pocketwatch which was awarded to readers of "Ally Sloper's Half Holiday," a British comic, first published on May 3, 1884. It has a legitimate claim to being the first comic magazine named after and featuring a regular character. It starred Ally Sloper, a blustery, lazy schemer often found "sloping" through alleys to avoid his landlord and other creditors. It debuted in 1867 in the humor magazine "Judy" — created by writer and fledgling artist Charles Henry Ross. The "Half Holiday" referred to in the title was the practice in Victorian Britain of allowing the workers home at lunchtime on a Saturday. This watch, w/an unsigned Swiss movement, dates to c. late 1880s and was issued as a competition prize. Watch face has small "Ally Sloper's Half Holiday" title above center and watch has smaller, second dial. Face has two 1/16" spots of bubbling at edges w/fine hairline cracks radiating from them. Back of case has incised portrait image of Ally Sloper above "Ally Sloper F.O.M." text. The "F.O.M." refers to "Friend Of Man," one of the character's monikers. Back of case has some scattered wear and edges of case show luster wear, w/brass showing through. Running and Fine overall. First we've offered in our 47 years and the earliest comic character timepiece we've seen.
