Item Description
41x80" three-sheet poster for 1940s re-release of the 1938 western film by Twentieth Century-Fox which starred Lou Gehrig. This is the only Hollywood movie in which baseball great Gehrig made a screen appearance, playing himself as a vacationing ballplayer visiting his sister (played by Evalyn Knapp) on a ranch in the fictional town of Rawhide, MT. The storyline revolves around Gehrig deciding to give up baseball for the life of a western cattle rancher. Once at the ranch, Gehrig encounters a protection racket preying on the ranchers by extortion and violence. He teams up w/a crusading local attorney to fight the crooks and ultimately put them in jail. Nice graphics include large image of Gehrig in cowboy hat w/gun drawn and in two other scenes showing him fighting. Poster also notes western singing star Smith Ballew before Gehrig on cast listing. Poster was issued in two pieces, w/bottom third being slightly off-center as printed, but graphics/text line up. Poster has fold lines as issued w/wear and some small tears at fold intersections. Margin edges have scattered dust soiling/aging/handling wear. Scattered aging and color touch-ups along fold lines. Still retains a Fine appearance as linen-mounted.
