Item Description
2.75x5.5x3/8" deep but front and back expand to depth of 1" so four cigars can be stored in slide-out interior compartment. Text below portrait reads: "The American Statesman/Come Every Whig, Your Influence Bring/On This Eventful Day, And Make The Western Vallies Ring/With Shouts Of Henry Clay." Overall VF with three small areas of wear. Front has about .25" dia. areas left and right of his face with a few tiny white marks where a few specks of the shellaced surface material are gone. Reverse has two small dots gone, only 1/16" and 1/8". The slide-out compartment has open end to insert cigars and a closed end to hold them. The accordion-like closure is all there, but has a hairline split on one side only where the fabric meets the cardboard side panel. This shows only when the case is expanded and view end on. Otherwise, just normal crazing of the shellaced outer surfaces. Beautifully executed and hand painted with subtle Clay portrait differences between the Hake Guide example (2004 Guide value of $2,850.00) and a recent Heritage example ($3,585.00). Among the earliest campaign items executed in full color. Julie Powell Collection.
