Item Description
Heavy cardboard box 12.5x22x4.75" deep with lift off lid containing 8.5x11" descriptive folder, big 21x24" board and two trays with foam inserts for the "Republicans" in "gold" vinyl and "Democrats" in "silver" vinyl. Pieces are three-dimensional with smallest pieces as pawns (8 elephants and 8 donkeys) 3.5" tall and the largest Kings (Nixon & McGovern) 7" tall. GOP men are: J. Edgar Hoover, Spiro Agnew, Melvin Laird, Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger, William Rogers, John Connally, and John Mitchell. The additional Democrats are: Edward Kennedy, John Lindsay, Hubert Humphrey, George McGovern, Eugene McCarthy, Henry Jackson, Samuel Yorty, Edmund Muskie. Kennedy and Muskie have hairline stress cracks on their faces, but remain structurally sound and contents are otherwise Mint. Box lid has a couple tiny paper flakes off two edges and lid is trifle convex but overall VF. Folder tells story of game creation by famous European sculptor Alexander Silveri of Austria. Game producer "LRH Enterprises" brought him to NYC to create sixteen miniature portraits of the men which were then molded. The company offered a set of 24K gold plate for the GOP and chrome plate for the Dems. This is only the second set we've seen in vinyl and the first back in Auction #188 exceeded $300.00. Remarkable, both as a chess set and a 1972 Presidential game foreshadowing the Watergate scandal era.
