Listed in Sullivan/Fischer ribbon book as TEMP-3 and one of only four Temperance movement ribbons they show to picture Washington. 3-1/8x7.5" ornate silk ribbon. Mint except for tiny 1-16" hole on bottom right margin. The Temperance movement began gradually following the War of 1812. This ribbon was inspired by patrons of Chases Tavern in Baltimore following an 1840 lecture at a nearby church. What began as a joke became serious as some of the group were moved to "Take The Pledge" and they created the Washington Temperance Society. They issued this ribbon which has text at the bottom honoring Washington as "The Handmaid And Guardian Angel Of Virtue, Liberty And Independence." The ribbon includes the grou'ps name, water fountain at top, ornate borders around his portrait and beneath the portrait "Birth Day Of Washington Feby. 22nd" followed by the word "Temperance" and the slogan quoted previously.
