Item Description
9x12" double-sided rwb envelope was originally used to send Fawcett comic books to servicemen during World War II. ©1943 Fawcett Publications, Inc. Front features image of Captain Marvel w/text reading "Send The Comics Canteen! To Your Friends In The Service!!" This is surrounded by illustrations of men from various branches of the service as well as example covers of five comic books - "Captain Marvel Adventures" #24, "Whiz Comics" #43, "Wow Comics" #14, "Master Comics" #38 and "Funny Animals" #7. Design on back includes additional image of Captain Marvel and the same five comic books w/text "For The Best Pastime Send Your Fighting Friends The - Comics Canteen! Favorite Reading Of Our Armed Forces." Several different envelopes were issued, this example is marked "No. 1" in upper left front corner. Envelope is tanned w/age and has handling wear w/creases and 1.25x3" area of moisture staining to back flap. Original child owner has added his name and address on both sides in pencil. VG. Rare and the first we've offered of this variety. From the Robert M. Overstreet Collection and comes with COA.
