Item Description
Black fabric band is 1.5" deep by 35" long. On close inspection well to the left and right of the ship's name are many, many near microscopic pin holes apparently from the piece being taken on and off a multitude of times. The piece still displays Essentially Mint with just a couple of vertical creases in the fabric from folding. This was one of the many ships purchased by the Navy from private parties to serve as military vessels. The ship has a fascinating history available on the internet. During the war its crew was largely composed of men from the Michigan Naval Brigade. The ship saw various actions around Cuba and Puerto Rico and then the ship saw action in the Philippines where it was hit November 13, 1900 by a typhoon and damaged to the point of such destruction that the Navy towed it out to sea and scuttled it, exact location unknown. In 1902 the Michigan Mariners received the Congressional Medal as well as a highly unusual cash award for participating in battle. A rarity.
